Plant scientist · PhD in Plant Developmental Biology

I am a plant scientist with a PhD in Plant Developmental Biology. My laboratory work has spanned transgenesis, CRISPR-based gene editing and chemical mutagenesis in crop systems. Those are the same three technologies whose regulatory treatment several of these articles argue about, so when an article here says that a regulatory line has no molecular basis, it is written by someone who has worked on both sides of that line.

the-opinions.com is an independent science opinion platform. It publishes argued analysis at the intersection of plant science, climate, agricultural research policy and science communication, written for researchers, policy professionals and engaged general readers alike.

What each article is

Every article defends a single, explicit thesis: a claim specific enough that evidence could show it to be wrong. That is the difference between opinion and commentary. The articles rotate across five areas: Crop Biotech & GMOs, Climate & Plant Systems, Science in Developing Nations, Science Policy & Funding, and Science Communication. Each piece links its claims to primary sources inline, so a reader can check any number against the document it came from.

How an article is made

  1. Research. A systematic read of recent primary literature, regulatory documents and court records, weighted toward work published in the last eighteen months.
  2. Thesis. The argued position is written down as one falsifiable sentence before drafting begins, which keeps the piece from drifting into description.
  3. Drafting. Sources are linked as the text is written, not added afterward, to avoid claims drifting away from what the sources actually say.
  4. Revision. Technical terms are defined on first use; hover over a dotted-underlined term in any article to see its definition. Acronyms are expanded. The strongest counterargument gets its own section.
  5. Publication. The article goes live, and stays open to correction and response.

Corrections

Factual errors are corrected in the article itself, and the article's “Updated” date is changed so readers can see that it has been revised. If you find an error, write to contact@the-opinions.com with the article and the passage in question.

Responses

There is no open comment section. Instead the site follows the journal tradition of curated correspondence: readers send substantive responses by email, and the strongest are published beneath the article with the responder’s permission. The bar is the same as for the articles: evidence-based, specific, and additive to the conversation. Courteous disagreement is welcome. Details are on the contact page.
